Instructional Workload | Manager Deadline – Friday, February 17th

Sent: February 1, 2023 7:57 pm

Today marks the kick-off of the academic year 2022/23 Instructional Workload (iwl.oasis.unc.edu) process! This Instructional Workload process involves academic departments and curricula. Programs, centers, and institutes do not participate. We hope that you will join us in Toy Lounge or on Zoom at 10am today for an initial training session. Light refreshments will be provided.

We have shifted the timeline for Instructional Workload (IWL) to occur during the current academic year. This change should help make the process easier since teaching assignments will be fresh in everyone’s minds, and we will be able to still make changes in ConnectCarolina (the official system of record) for the current semester. Beginning next Fall, we will make the final transition to have the IWL process occur twice a year, early in the Fall and Spring for the current semester.

Returning users will notice that the system has a new look and feel as well as new leave/buyout definitions. While the system is new, it is meant to minimize needed inputs and focus solely on how workload is met and distributed. Today’s training session (recording will be posted on the CAS Business Operations website) will offer an overview of using the new system. Moreover, the Dean’s Office will be hosting a drop-in help session next Tuesday (2/7) from 2-4pm for any individual questions. Furthermore, we have updated our attached Quick Reference Guide to reflect the changes and new definitions.

Purpose of IWL

The Instructional Workload system allows units to validate the course workloads of faculty and other employees responsible for instruction. Completing this process is imperative to satisfy UNC System policies on faculty workload monitoring. Beyond the verification need, this IWL information may be used by the Dean’s Office to inform current teaching discussions, Instructional Budget allocations, salary savings, and future faculty hiring decisions related to instructional need.

Please focus on verifying the instructional data imported from ConnectCarolina for your faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants/fellows, as well as providing information about leaves, buyouts and releases. The deadlines are important to meet allow everyone to complete the process and ensure we have the best information available to understand our teaching.
