Instructional Workload | Manager Deadline – Monday, February 26th, 2024
Sent: February 13, 2024 11:03 amThis message is being sent to all business managers in the College of Arts & Sciences with an informational copy to all deans, directors, and department chairs.
Today marks the kick-off of the Spring 2024 Instructional Workload (iwl.oasis.unc.edu) process! This Instructional Workload process involves academic departments and curricula. Programs, centers, and institutes do not participate.
Instructional Workload (IWL) now occurs during the current academic year, with this year being the first time are doing it by semester. This change in timing should make the process easier since teaching assignments will be fresh in everyone’s minds, and you will be able to still make assignment updates in Connect Carolina (the official system of record) for the current semester. Our IWL system remains consistent with what we did last Fall, with only minor functional updates.
To refresh your knowledge about the IWL process:
- The Quick Reference Guide covers the most current rules and processes and should be reviewed by all users.
- The IWL PowerPoint is a higher level resource that has been updated to reflect our current semester approach and system changes.
- The recorded training session from last Spring is still available for those who are entirely new to the system. The navigation and interaction is still generally applicable, with only minor rule/column/type updates covered in the Quick Reference Guide.
- Finally, the Dean’s Office will host a drop-in help session this Friday (02/16) from 10-11AM for any individual questions or assistance.
Important Dates
- Wednesday, February 14th: System open date
- Friday, February 16th: CASBO-led Drop-in zoom help session from 10-11 AM (see calendar invite)
- Monday, February 26th: Managers’ deadline for completion
- Friday, March 1st: Chairs’ deadline for final approval
- Friday, March 8th: Budget analysts’ deadline for final approval
- Friday, March 15th: SADs’ deadline for final approval
The deadlines allow everyone to complete the process, allow CC changes within the semester, and ensure we have the best information available to make related allocations.
Purpose of IWL
The Instructional Workload system allows units to validate the course workloads of faculty and other employees responsible for instruction. Completing this process is imperative to satisfy UNC System policies on faculty workload monitoring. Beyond the verification need, this IWL information may be used by the Dean’s Office to inform current teaching discussions, Instructional Budget allocations, salary savings, and future faculty hiring decisions related to instructional need.
Please verify the instructional data imported from ConnectCarolina for your faculty, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants/fellows, as well as provide extra information about leaves, buyouts and releases that impact instruction (we have pre-loaded some, so please verify those as well).
