Exam Excuse Request Process Began March 18
Sent: March 19, 2024 11:22 amThe following message to all College of Arts and Sciences faculty and instructors of record (with informational copies to department chairs and managers) is being sent on behalf of Chloē Russell, Associate Dean and Director of UNC Advising, and Abigail Panter, Senior Associate Dean of the Office of Undergraduate Education in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Colleagues,
Starting yesterday, March 18, undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences can submit requests for exam excuses for the Spring 2024 term. Exam excuse requests are reviewed in accordance with the Final Examination Policy and the official Final Exam Schedule. The time of a final exam cannot be changed once it is published in the official schedule and posted on the Registrar’s Office website.
As a reminder of the process, instructors of record will be notified via email for approved exam excuses, and the process will work as follows:
- Each day at 7 p.m., an email will be sent to primary instructors summarizing all exam excuses in an easy-to-read table.
- The table will highlight new requests at the top with previously approved exam excuses below. Therefore, only the most recent email from the exam excuse system needs to be saved.
- The email will be sent only if a new exam excuse has been approved.
Approved students will be notified that it is still their responsibility to reach out to you to arrange alternative plans for their exam.
Please note this process is only for students within the College; for students in professional schools, you will still receive emailed .pdf versions of exam excuses directly from the respective deans (or their designees).
Lastly, the university has coordinated department and school graduation ceremonies across campus for the first time this year. As a result, some graduation ceremonies are now scheduled on the last day of exams, May 10. While these ceremonies do not directly conflict with exam times, we understand that graduating seniors may have concerns about having both an exam and a graduation ceremony on the same day.
We want to remind you that, according to university policy, we will not issue official exam excuses for students who do not have a documented conflict with the exam time. However, as instructors, you have the authority to make final exam arrangements with individual students without requiring an exam excuse, provided it aligns with your department’s guidelines.
Please consider the unique circumstances of our graduating seniors who may request an accommodation. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in supporting our students.
Sincerely,
Chloē Russell
