J-1 EV Update Process Changes

We are reaching out to share a reminder regarding the J-1 update procedures, as well as inform you of updates related to the J-1 Exchange Visitor Update process.
As a reminder, it is your responsibility on behalf of the Hosting Unit to notify ISSS 2 months in advance of any changes to the J-1 Exchange Visitor’s J-1 EV Program, including but not limited to:
- changes in funding sources and/or amount
- changes in activities
- changes in job title/appointment/or additional appointments
- change in PI/Faculty Mentor/Hosting Unit
- changes in sites of activity
- extension of Exchange Visitor program
- reduction in length of program
- J-1 Exchange Visitor’s absences from campus and/or travel outside the U.S. that exceed 30 days
J-1 Exchange Visitor Update requests are submitted via the ISSS Portal. The complete request must be submitted to ISSS at least 2 months prior to the change(s) taking effect, so that there is sufficient time to review and approve the change(s), and in some cases, issue an updated DS-2019 form, before the change(s) can take effect.
Please note that Science and Security and Export Control have developed new instructions and procedures regarding the types of updates that require Hosting Unit notification and how to inform their offices of these changes. For more information, please visit this webpage.
For updates to the J-1 Exchange Visitor’s program that require Science and Security and Export Control clearances, Hosting Units will need to follow the procedures outlined on their website, and upload the Science and Security and Export control clearances in the ISSS Portal, prior to final submission of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Update request to ISSS.
