ISSS Update – New Visual Workflow tools for J-1 Exchange Visitor Requests

Sent: February 21, 2023 8:21 pm

In recent years, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has made a number of enhancements related to its J-1 Exchange Visitor (EV) Program. In collaboration with Operational Excellence and many campus partners, we developed the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program Playbook. The Playbook provides guidance relevant to various campus units about the University’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program and was rolled out in August 2021.

November 2022 marked the launch of the ISSS Portal, a new immigration case-management system, which allows for the electronic submission of J-1 Exchange Visitor requests.

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Playbook enhances stakeholders’ understanding of the University’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. The ISSS Portal streamlines processing and improves the user experience for UNC hosting units, as well as for international students and scholars. In addition, both strengthen UNC’s compliance with federal regulations.

To complement these two initiatives, ISSS has created two new visual workflows, one for New J-1 EV Requests and one for J-1 EV Extension Requests. The purpose of these workflows is to provide Hosting Units and other stakeholders with a concise visual tool that can be easily referenced to understand the University’s process of welcoming J-1 Exchange Visitors to campus and maintain program compliance requirements for current J-1 Exchange Visitors.

ISSS is developing visual workflows for other university-sponsored employee categories as well as additional features in the ISSS Portal, and we will send further updates as these become available.
